The closing night of the Mercury Lounge, how sad - we have been coming here for
years and Jimmy has been playing here for years, nine years in fact. We knew tonight
was going to go off. Everyone from Premier Artists, Liberation Music, and
Mushroom Music etc was there. Plus some guests from the Logies wandered up from
the other end of the Casino to join in the fun. And what a show all were treated to.
Mink started the night off and got the crowd warmed up. When Jimmy came on the
place exploded and we were off on one hell of a gig.
The band were a lot more into it tonight with Danny looking more at ease with one
gig under his belt. I’m thinking he is only going to get better the more he plays with
Jimmy. Jackie is doing great on drums - he has big shoes to fill replacing Wazza. Half
way through the set David Campbell slipped quietly onto the stage to join Mahalia on
backing vocals. What a bonus!! He had just performed the closing song at the Logies
before heading up to the Mercury. Also a bonus was Tim Rogers joining Jimmy on
stage for the current single off Double Happiness - Out of Time. Awesome, Tim is
such a character and I love it when he grabs Jimmy’s hand and starts swinging it. For
that song Dario gave up his bass to some guy, not sure he was though, but he also
jumped up later and did some backing vocals in one song.
After Working Class Man, Michael Gudinski came on stage and thanked Jimmy and
everyone for coming to the Mercury for the last nine years. He encouraged everyone
to welcome Jimmy back on stage for an encore, (like we needed encouraging!!) David
Campbell then joined Jimmy for River Deep, Mountain High; brilliant, such a
showman is David. Just as his dad does, he reached into the crowd to grab hands,
much to the delight of many. What a shame he only did one song!! An awesome
version of Do or Die followed with Jimmy’s punch returning for our cameras. Love it;
he threw in a couple of small ones too!! The guys left the stage and Michael Gudinski
was back giving Jimmy a huge rap, just as he deserves. “The best Aussie rock and roll
singer ever”. No arguments from us there Michael. Then Jimmy returned to the stage
to farewell the Mercury Lounge with Goodbye. Awesome, everybody went off. As
Jimmy and the band left the stage sparkles fell from above over everyone - the end of
the greatest venue. Let’s hope when it re-locates and opens, it is as good as this one.
