The Adelaide Cabaret Festival is a yearly event and sees a vast array of performers appear. This year David Campbell was running the show with his wife Lisa. So far it had been a huge success and this weekend promised to be even bigger. Jimmy Barnes and David Campbell together, what more could you ask for!!
Headed over to Adelaide straight after work and after a quick bite to eat we were off to Mahalia’s gig at the Piano Bar. There was a huge queue to get in when doors opened and the people kept coming in. It was at max capacity and everyone ended up sitting on the floor in front of the stage. Mahalia had the Soulmates with her as well as Tina Harrod and Darren Percival, both who had on their own gigs at the festival. Mahalia put on one hell of a show. She looked great, pregnancy is definitely agreeing with her. Jimmy and David joined her on stage, David for one song, Jimmy for two, an added bonus for those who had missed out on tickets to the Dad and Dave show. When they came on everyone got to their feet and moved down the front. All were having a great time. It was a fun night, an excellent start to the weekend.
The festival had different acts happening all over the weekend but the main attraction was the Dad and Dave Show. Excitement grew as everyone waited for the door to open. When it did we had to walk through the theatre and across the stage, the stage was set up on the stage. Seating was at tables and there was a true cabaret atmosphere about the place, very effective. Once we were seated we sat and waited with great anticipation.
The band came onto the stage, the music started up and out of nowhere, surprising us all, David, Jimmy and Mahalia walked across the front of the stage and up onto it. They took their seats and launched straight into Night and Day, which they had sung last night in Mahalia’s gig. They sang some of the same songs they sang at The Speigeltent, but also some different ones. There was a bit of everything, Jimmy sung the best version of I'm Still On Your Side I’ve heard for awhile, David played guitar and Jimmy hit every note, and on Sunday it was perfect, it brought tears to my eyes, I love this song. He also sang Four Walls and his story before had everyone in fits of laughter, and left a few in shock, I’m sure. There were some songs in there from Jimmy’s soon to be released album too. Mahalia sang the song she had sung at David and Lisa’s wedding, a beautiful song that had everyone at the wedding in tears and I can see why. She also sang Midnight Train To Georgia and on the Sunday night she added You Are My Sunshine with Darren Percival and Tina Harrod. David upped the tempo with Good Love from his latest album. He held the crowd captivated with Peter Allen’s Tenterville Saddler. On the second night Jimmy and David sang Wichita Lineman, which was recorded on Jimmy’s Double Happiness album. Sunday also had Jimmy singing Mona Lisa, proving to any doubters he can sing softly and does not always scream. There were a few gospel songs thrown in as well, a Mahalia Jackson song and one Jimmy had heard when visiting the States recently. The highlight of both nights was when Jimmy and David sang You’ll Never Walk Alone. This surpassed Christmas Eve at Carols By Candlelight. It was just amazing to hear them singing this song, what voices they have. And David when he hit that note - wow!!! The three of them, Jimmy, David & Mahalia joined forces to finish off with Love Me Tender.
It was a very entertaining show, Saturday they were a bit nervous but that was all gone on Sunday, they were a lot more relaxed. Jimmy and David bounced off each other the whole time and had some funny stories to tell which had everyone laughing, at one point I had tears rolling down my face, they were so funny. Might have been the disco dancing that was happening up there that set me off, or maybe the way the two of them were so in sync with their movements when they were doing backing vocals for Mahalia, or it could have been one of their stories. But it was their singing that took my breath away. They left the stage to a well deserved standing ovation both nights.
