June 25th 2010 .... BACK TO THE CITY - TRAK, TOORAK - VIC

Couldn’t believe it we were off to see Jimmy at Trak, a new venue in Toorak. It’s been awhile since we have had a city gig. Trak is Frank Stivala’s venue, The Mercury Lounge’s replacement. It had only been open a few weeks and we couldn’t wait to get there and check it out. Wow, what a place, it was huge - the old night club, Silvers and the old theatre combined into one massive venue. It was great to see some familiar faces around the place too, just like Mercury days! Jimmy’s old sound guy, Paul was there to show us the way once we got inside. He looks after the sound here, although not tonight, Jimmy had his crew in. We went in, down one level, then Frank and Paul opened the big doors and there was the stage down another level. It was a massive place with bars here there and everywhere. Down at the stage were all the old familiar faces, all the old gang who we don’t see too much of these days. It was like going back to the good old Mercury days, although I don’t think Trak has quite the same atmosphere, Mercury was a lot smaller. But there was a buzz in the air as memories of good times at Mercury came flooding back to us all.
Before Jimmy came on Mahalia and the Soulmates entertained us with a short set. It’s been awhile since Mahalia has opened up for Jimmy and she was great. She played some of her old songs plus a few new ones and really got the crowd going. Elly sang a song with Bonnie Anderson as a tribute to the 12 month anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death. 12 months - time flies!! When Mahalia has finished the curtain came down again as the crew set up for Jimmy.
Then as the curtain rose, the atmosphere also rose to another level and Jimmy and the band took to the stage. Driving Wheels started up with Charlie on his pedal steel, first time he has used this and it was awesome, just what the song needs. Davey Lane was back on guitar relacing Danny from the last tour. Mahalia replaced Shauna on backing vocals and Ben provided a third (sometimes fourth) guitar. Dario, Tony and Jackie were there too. Loved having Jimmy back in our face, so close. I reckon he likes it too, he feeds off the crowd and it takes him back to his earlier days. This is the best way too see him, take in all the emotion of his live performance, and take the journey with him and with the band too. They were all having a good one tonight. At one point Charlie’s slide went flying into the crowd. I missed it and wasn’t sure what Jimmy was asking me to find. I thought Davey had lost something; obviously I was too entranced in the music! Lucky someone else was on the ball and found it for him. There was not much change to the set list, no new added songs but God or Money was back, this is such a catchy song. It gets stuck in your head, maybe even a little more than Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. It was awesome gig by Jimmy.
Trak is a fantastic venue and it was great to be back at a city gig for a change and catching up with everyone again. Hopefully Jimmy will play there quite often in the future.
