Headed up north to the two gigs in NSW. They were not part of the Red Hot Summer Tour, just a couple of random gigs in the middle with no Thirsty Merc and no Noiseworks. The first was at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre in Nowra. Our accommodation was across the road from the venue, so we walked over to the venue via the Thai restaurant for tea.
It was a seated gig and tickets were on sale before we knew anything about it, only to members I was told. Needless to say we were in the sixth row, not the front row. It was ok though, better than expected!!
Mahalia was support and put in a great performance. Her band was Jimmy’s band - Lachy, Danny, Jackie, Gary, Natasha and Ben was on bass, but Dario got up on guitar in Proud Mary. It was weird seeing him on guitar instead of bass but he was excellent in his solo. The best way to describe Mahalia’s voice is powerful, she sure belts the notes out. Her set was very enjoyable and we managed to get up for a bit of a dance!
There was a short break before Jimmy hit the stage in a very different way. He walked onto the stage with his band and we had to wait for the live cross from the ABC for their Australia Day TV special. Jimmy explained to us all what was going on and how he was going to start the show with the last song, very weird he said. Once the ABC crossed over there was a quick interview with Jimmy about Australia Day and what it means to him. Then it was time to rock with Working Class Man for the TV followed by Largs Pier Hotel. The old and the new both televised. Then the cameras were gone and we were into the gig proper!
It was a different crowd here tonight, a lot of older people. Around us we had a few that were raring to go and got up to rock out with us. We weren’t up for the whole gig, but most! I couldn’t believe people were getting up and walking out while Jimmy was singing. Don’t think he could believe it either, how rude!! Sit down gigs - eeeehhh!!
Mahalia only stayed for the first couple of songs, then slipped away with Ben and Ruby leaving backing vocals to Gary and Natasha. The boys - Dario, Danny and Lachy were in their shirts and ties, looking very suave! The three of them are great mates and it shows every time they are on stage together, an awesome combination, and all awesome musicians too!!
With Working Class Man up we wondered what Jimmy would finish the set with. He really surprised me with Merry Go Round. Not a bad way to end the main set. The encore was the usual and when he started Khe Sanh they were all up out of their seats, no surprise there!! It does annoy me a little that it takes that song to get people going when Jimmy has so many other brilliant songs to get into.
But I really did enjoy tonight, maybe because it was different, inside, seated, no lining up, no waiting around etc. I had a lot of fun and went a little crazy!! Oh well someone had to get the vibe happening!!
